In terms of occupational mix we have people from the fields of engineering, marketing, IT, university, local government officials, manufacturing, teaching, finance and so on. There is also a broad cultural mix. The varied backgrounds of our members bring a multiplicity of experiences, knowledge, insight and interests; all of which enriches the subject matter of the speeches which our members deliver.
3.
DO I HAVE TO LIVE IN REMUERA TO JOIN THE CLUB ?
No.
The majority of members live in Remuera as a matter of personal convenience as travel to and from the club is easier, or perhaps their place of work is not too far away, or the meeting time is well-situated for them. It's just a matter of convenience.
4.

President:
6.
DO I HAVE TO BE A GOOD PUBLIC SPEAKER TO JOIN ?
No, not at all.
Our aim is to help you improve.
Whether you lack confidence and are nervous about doing Public Speaking or if you are already quite confident and just want to brush up on your skills you are equally eligible to join. We welcome competent speakers, as they have much they can pass on to others in need of support and guidance.
7.
WHAT KIND OF SKILLS CAN I LEARN IN YOUR CLUB ?
Firstly we will teach you
how to prepare, construct and
deliver public speeches. Secondly you will learn the skills of
listening through a variety of duties that have to be performed at every meeting. Your listening ability helps you turn what you hear into constructive feedback for others. Thirdly you will learn how to
evaluate others. Lastly, you will learn the skills of
leadership and how to be a supportive leader and meeting organiser through the organisational roles that are included as part of our club’s Communication and Leadership Program. In short, whatever particular personal public speaking related skill you may seek to improve upon, we will help you.
8.
CAN I VISIT YOUR CLUB AS A GUEST ?
Yes
you can. In fact we think it is a good idea to visit a couple of times before making the commitment to join. This will give you the opportunity to see a couple of complete meetings in progress allowing you to judge for yourself whether or not it is likely to meet your needs.
9.
DOES IT COST ME ANYTHING TO COME AS A VISITOR ?
No.
There is no charge for coming to visit and observe what we do.
10.
WILL I BE PRESSURED TO JOIN IF I JUST COME AS A VISITOR ?
No.
In fact you are welcome to come along for a second time as a guest if you weren't so sure after the first time. Obviously we will be keen to hear what you think of our club and we hope you take the chance to tell us. Please remember to ask for an information sheet about the club when you come.
11.
WILL I BE ASKED TO SPEAK IF I COME AS A VISITOR ?
No pressure will be put on you to speak.
However we might ask if you would like to have a go during our "Table Topic"
session if you want to. This is an informal fun part of each nights program where members are given a topic with hardly any warning and are asked to speak to the topic for only 90 seconds. Participation by visitors is optional. For members it is compulsory! It's a great opportunity to encourage people to think on their feet and start to learn the basics of public speaking.
12.
WILL THIS HELP IMPROVE MY ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS?
Yes,
but it is not an English speaking course for people wanting to learn English. However, if English is not your first language you will certainly find Toastmasters helpful. Toastmasters is for people who already have a reasonably good grasp of the English language and want to enhance their
public speaking skills. Public speaking gives you opportunities to add interest, excitement, emotion, clarity and depth of meaning to your speeches by exploring the subtleties, variety, colour and richness of the English language.
13.
IS THERE MUCH PRESSURE ON MEMBERS TO PERFORM ?
No.
You develop and grow at your own pace. In this busy world we need to be flexible and allow people to progress at a pace that fits in with other demands in their lives. The club organises each meeting via a roster sent out 4 weeks in advance. Naturally it is expected that people who are rostered for speaking roles will carry out those duties as allocated. However the flexibility of the roster allows people to find a substitute from the membership list or swap duties with another member.
14.
WHAT SORT OF HELP CAN I EXPECT ?
One of the best things about Remuera Toastmasters Club is that we provide a supportive yet fun-filled atmosphere in which to learn. We offer effective evaluations to identify skills you already have as well as giving you specific personalized recommendations on how to improve. You will get feed back on how to prepare, organize and deliver speeches. You will be evaluated on the use of vocal variety, visual aids and body language. You will get advice on how to overcome nervousness and gain confidence. Whether you want to join just for interest or to help you with specific occupational goals, we guarantee you'll have fun.
