Meet Some Of The Members

Our members are from all walks of life. Below some of them describe in their own words what the Remuera Toastmasters experience has meant to them.

We love life, we love learning new skills, we love opportunities to practise public speaking and helping others to do the same. We are an eclectic group of interesting folk who have learned volumes from our Remuera Toastmasters membership. Our various interests, business and educational backgrounds and diverse ethnicities along with a broad spread of age groups make us an appealing group to be part of.

Past Club President, Tony, has used a combination of academic and business skills to advance his career as a Pharmacy owner and now as a real estate agent.

His recent MBA graduation and the skills being acquired in the Remuera Toastmasters Club have put icing on the cake for his career prospects by adding confidence and personal presentation skills to his business pursuits.

Tony values the skills acquired through Toastmasters as a big contributor to his career path development.

Rob visited three other Toastmaster clubs before joining the Remuera Club.

In his own words: “I chose them because of the warmth and friendliness shown to me from the moment I met their members and this kindness has continued throughout every meeting. The experience and support from its members helped me overcome my fear of public speaking and in a very short time, they gave me the confidence to give speeches on a regular basis".

Rob is a Life-Coach and author.

Peter, one of our longer serving members is a retired corporate marketing executive.

He finds every Toastmasters meeting is an opportunity to learn new skills while also having fun. He enjoys mentoring newer members but also likes

the competitiveness of speech contests.

The Toastmasters club is only one of his passions. Another is skiing and during the winter months he manages to alternate our mid-week Toastmasters meeting with midweek visits to Mt Ruapehu.

Max has enjoyed years of pleasure from his motorbike adventures around NZ. No ride is too far or too challenging and every ride is a thrill.

His experience in running his own business development consultancy is a good example of the two-way benefits that the club derives from its members. We all learn from the wider business and work-life

experiences that people like Max bring to the club.

We also learn how to take leadership, organisational and public

speaking skills back into the work-place.

Jenni has travelled widely internationally and attended many professional conferences in her career as an educational consultant specialising in teaching children who have dyslexia and other learning difficulties.

The benefit of her experience as a teacher has brought some unique insights to her interesting speeches. Jenni is enormously grateful for the presentation skills she has acquired from her membership at Remuera Toastmasters Club and she intends to use these towards delivering training courses in the future.

Ayla started in the wine industry when she was 18 to study winemaking and is currently an Account Manager for a Spanish Wine Company. Remuera Toastmasters has added to her speaking abilities in wine educational activities and even confidence foraging new accounts.

She is passionate about travel, food and writing.

After a recent stint overseas she has returned to the club to enjoy the laughs, words games and speech challenges every meeting brings. Each of our members brings another thread to the rich tapestry of life!

Not only is Barbara an accomplished musician with a number of orchestral instruments but is a true example of one who has unique talent for dipping into a vast vocabulary and using this gift to paint magnificent word pictures.

Barbara is a retired secondary school maths teacher but you could easily be forgiven for thinking she was an English teacher. She has a flair for humorous speeches and in her “spare time” writes poetry.
